Earth Day Highlights CDTA’s Commitment to Fostering Greener Communities

ALBANY, NY (April 21, 2025) The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) is celebrating Earth Day and wants to encourage the public to celebrate as well by using one of the many CDTA services available to our community. By using CDTA services, commuters can reduce harmful emissions and cut their carbon footprint.

According to the New York Public Transit Association (NYPTA), public transportation lessens our dependence on foreign oil and saves 1.3 billion gallons of gasoline in New York State every year. Using CDTA will also help people cut transportation costs. NYPTA states an individual can save more than $9,900 annually by taking public transportation. CDTA continues to work to create a greener and more sustainable Capital Region. Here are several ways to make your commute “green.”

Ride an Electric Bus: CDTA electrified its fleet in 2020 as the first upstate transit property to add electric buses. Currently, CDTA operates 8 electric buses, with 9 more expected in 2026. These buses meet CDTA’s goal to reduce the region’s carbon footprint. CDTA also has 10 hybrid buses.

Hop on a CDPHP Cycle! Bike: CDTA and CDPHP recently launched Season 9 of CDPHP Cycle! Customers can utilize more than 600 bikes throughout the region, including 400 electric bikes. Since its inception, CDPHP Cycle! has been dedicated to enhancing sustainable transportation options. Last year, Cycle! shattered previous ridership records as members logged nearly 83,000 trips, demonstrating the growing popularity of bike-sharing as a reliable mobility solution.

DRIVE: CDTA’s carsharing service, DRIVE, offers a network of zero-emission vehicles 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to customers. People can book a DRIVE vehicle for just $5 per hour plus a one-time $20 application fee. Customers can pick up a car in either Albany, Troy, Schenectady or Cohoes.

CDTA will also be celebrating by participating in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Earth Day event on Tuesday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the DEC’s building on Broadway in Albany. There will be CDPHP Cycle! e-bike demonstrations outside the building. For more information on CDTA’s mobility menu, visit: www.cdta.org
