Earth Day Highlights CDTA’s Efforts to Create Greener Communities
ALBANY, NY (April 22, 2024) -- The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) is celebrating Earth Day and wants to encourage the public to celebrate as well by using one of the many CDTA services available to our community. By using CDTA services, commuters can reduce harmful emissions and cut their carbon footprint. According to the New York Public Transit Association (NYPTA), transportation lessens our dependence on foreign oil and saves 1.3 billion gallons of gasoline in New York State every year. Using CDTA will also help people cut transportation costs. CDTA continues to work to create a greener and more sustainable Capital Region. Here are several ways to make your commute “green.”
Ride an Electric Bus: CDTA now has 8 electric buses in its fleet. These buses meet CDTA’s goals to reduce the region’s carbon footprint. CDTA also has more than 24 hybrid buses.
Utilize FLEX or FLEX+: FLEX is a micro transit mobility option, operating in Colonie, Guilderland, and Southern Saratoga. It allows customers to use an app and request a ride, just like rideshare. CDTA also launched FLEX+ in 2024. It’s a convenient and cost-effective way for customers to travel to and from the Joseph L. Bruno Rail Station and Downtown Albany. Customers can pre-book trips around their train’s arrival and departure.
Hop on a CDPHP Cycle! Bike: CDTA and CDPHP just launched Season 8 of CDPHP Cycle! Customers can utilize more than 600 bikes throughout the region, including 200 more electric bikes this year. This year also includes new technology – an updated CDPHP Cycle! app that makes renting a bike quicker and easier.
DRIVE: CDTA’s carsharing service, DRIVE, offers a network of zero-emission vehicles 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to customers. People can book a DRIVE vehicle for just $5 per hour plus a one-time $20 application fee. Customers can pick up a car in either Albany or Schenectady.
CDTA will also be providing an electric bus for the Cohoes High School’s Green Energy Science class on Earth Day, April 22. The class will be hosting an Electric Vehicle display from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The goal of the event is to expose and inform students and staff about the future of transportation and the careers associated with it.
